What is the best AAC app? There is no one-size-fits-all app and there are many features that can make an app work well

One thing I like to do when checking out a new robust AAC app is play around with it by creating simple sentences using a mix of core and peripheral vocabulary. Some time ago I did a speed test on myself using a few basic sentences. I timed myself to see how well I could make the sentence (or as close as I could).

I thought the results were really interesting and wanted to share! Please note that I fully understand this is not the most valid way to find the best AAC app. It’s just a measure of how easy it is to find the vocabulary and I’m sure the results below will vary according to my familiarity with the app… although I’ve tried to choose apps that I know how to use quite well. Just for simplicity, I didn’t worry about punctuation.

To make sure I knew where everything was (at least in general), I created each sentence first, untimed and counted the number of hits it took. So, on the second lap, I timed it.
