With everything you need to back up and recover data in a stand-alone appliance, Barracuda Backup is a cost-effective and easy-to-use solution. It also offers scalable replication both to other appliances and to the cloud, with fast live booting from backup images locally or in the cloud another key benefit.

Probably best known for its firewall and filtering products, Barracuda is also in the backup business, using the same appliance-based approach to protecting data that keeps the bad guys at bay. In fact, it has a whole family of scalable backup appliances that are further enhanced with site-to-site replication and cloud replication. The latest version also offers live booting from VMware backups for near-instant recovery.

The Barracuda 490, reviewed here, is a 1U rack with an internal capacity of 4TB. The flagship 1090 model is a 4U rack with 102TB capacity, plus hot-swappable drives and redundant power supplies and optional 10GbE fiber connectivity.

Barracuda Backup appliances are based on industry standard Supermicro server hardware with no additional software or hardware required. Everything you need comes right on the device, and you don’t have to pay extra for every server or app you want to protect, either. Just buy one or more devices with enough storage and network bandwidth to handle it and you’re good to go, with several models to choose from.

The cheapest is the standalone 190 (£899 ex VAT), which is aimed at smaller businesses and departmental backups. It’s equipped with a single Gigabit Ethernet port plus 500GB of usable storage to handle backups of around 200GB. The rest of the models are rack mount units with increasing numbers of storage and RAID protection as you move up the scale. At the high end, redundant power and 10GbE connectivity are added to the mix.

The most expensive model is the 4U 1090, which includes a 34-disk storage array, a 10 GbE network interface, and hot-swap redundant power, and offers a suggested backup volume of 50 TB from of a usable internal capacity of 102 TB. The MSRP for this small lot is £121,349 (excl. VAT).

Despite the differences in size, Barracuda Backup appliances run the same software, have the same tools at hand, and operate the same way. They can also be used to protect both physical assets and virtual machines with support for VMware and Hyper-V as standard. In addition, Barracuda software is designed to take advantage of industry-standard protocols and built-in APIs, meaning it can protect both Windows and Exchange servers, for example, without having to install anything extra on the hosts themselves.

There are exceptions, so agents are included to back up SQL databases and Windows system state on protected servers, for example; a custom Linux agent is also available. Agents are pre-loaded into the application, ready to be downloaded as needed.

Barracuda’s usable web-based management interface provides a status dashboard and the ability to drill down into details.

For this review we were given access to Barracuda’s own network with several appliances already installed, to which Barracuda added a Backup 490 appliance for our evaluation plus an administrator account to access the integrated web interface. With this, you can set up and manage all your appliances from one console, which we found to be intuitive and responsive: it includes the usual dashboard-like status display to keep you informed of what’s going on, and lets you drill down more details as needed.

An app is also available for mobile monitoring and management, and while there may occasionally be a few alerts to deal with, overall the management interface does a good job and operators shouldn’t need much training to use it

Backup sources were very easy to add. Agents are rarely required – just provide a name or IP address and the software will do most of the hard work for you, with a handy option to test the connection to make sure you’ve got it right. Backups can then be scheduled and stored on one device, with automatic compression and deduplication applied to minimize the storage required. Unfortunately, you can’t archive from the device to tape, but for added protection, the backup data can be replicated, either to another device or to cloud storage.

A faster and more reliable alternative to tape (especially when it comes to recovery), we found the replication options very easy to understand and configure. However, you need a 490 model (£4,499 ex VAT) or higher to host tiered backups of other appliances, plus an additional subscription to use Barracuda’s cloud service, a flat fee based on the amount of storage required. , priced in 200GB chunks.

There are many options for recovering data, starting with the ability to restore directly from the original backup device, a replica on another device, or from the cloud. You can also restore single files, folders, and entire systems using a simple restore browser to locate required backups. Alternatively, end users can be allowed to retrieve files themselves using Barracuda’s Copy Cloud service.

Bare-metal recovery is possible for full Windows servers, along with message-level recovery for Exchange servers instead of having to recover the entire store. VMware users can also boot backups of their virtual machines to an appliance or, after a recent upgrade, from a cloud replica.

You can boot a VMware virtual machine backup to a Barracuda appliance or from a cloud replica.

We’ve found this option to be surprisingly simple and fast, a live boot from the cloud taking just a few minutes in our tests. Unfortunately, Hyper-V users still don’t get this option, but with VMware still the dominant player in the virtualization market, it’s an option worth having for rapid recovery of business-critical systems .

Of course, security is one
