Block Ads With Hosts File

Block Ads With Hosts File – Health update…things go from bad to worse…slipped and fell in my kitchen and broke my leg (ankle) plates and screws to fix. Several weeks later … with a walking boot on, I slipped again and fell. While trying to break my fall… instead I broke both arms. Imagine that!! A cast on my leg and a cast on both arms … so as much as I hate that I think it’s time to retire from maintaining my Hosts file …

A Guide To Hosts File And Using It To Block Websites

You can use a modified HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs, and even most hijackers and potentially unwanted programs. This is achieved by blocking the connection(s) that supply these tiny beads. The hosts file is loaded into memory (cache) at startup, so there is no need to turn on, adjust or change any settings except for the DNS client service (see below). Windows automatically checks for the existence of a HOSTS file and if found, the HOSTS file first checks for entries to the web page you just requested. 0.0.0.0 (prefix) is considered the location of your computer, so when an entry listed in the MVPS HOSTS file is requested on a page you are viewing, your computer thinks 0.0.0.0 is the location of the file. When this file is not found, it jumps to the next file and thus blocks the ad server from loading the banner, cookie or any unscrupulous tracking or javascript file.

Example – the following entry 0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net blocks all files provided by that DoubleClick server to the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements. Why? … because “Ad Servers” like Doubleclick (and many others) in some cases try to open a separate connection on the web page you are viewing, record your movements and yes … follow you to additional websites you may visit.

Using a well-designed HOSTS file can speed up web page loading by not having to wait for those ads, annoying banners, hit counters, etc. to load. This also helps protect your privacy and security by blocking websites that can track your viewing habits, also known as “click-thru tracking” or Data Miners. Simply using a HOSTS file is not a cure-all for Internet dangers, but it does provide another very effective “layer of protection.”

In case you’re wondering… all of this happens in microseconds, which is much faster than trying to download a file halfway around the world. Another great feature of the HOSTS file is that it is a two-way file, which means that if any parasite gets into your system (usually bundled with other products), the culprit cannot get out (call home) as long as the necessary records are there. This is why it is important to keep your HOSTS file up to date. Get notified of MVPS HOSTS updates

Important Note: The HOSTS file now includes a change to the prefix in the HOSTS entries to “0.0.0.0” instead of the usual “127.0.0.1”.

This was done to solve a slowdown issue that occurs with the change Microsoft made to the “TCP loopback interface” in Win8.1.

This change to the prefix should not affect normal users. I have received some feedback that COMODO antivirus, and System Mechanic seem to have problems with the prefix “0.0.0.0” … to solve this problem:

You can use the “Replace” function in Notepad to convert the entries, or one of these free programs (see below) has an option to convert the entries from “0.0.0.0” to “127.0.0.1.

This download contains a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP and then copy the included updated HOSTS file to the correct location. For more information, see the version of Windows that applies to you…

How To Edit The Hosts File In Windows

Microsoft has done it again…making changes to the operating system, without any kind of explanation. If you recently upgraded to Windows 10 version 1709, you probably won’t be able to make any changes to the DNS client, as it is grayed out. However, if you had previously disabled or set to Manual, DNS Client Service, you can still do so. Then to make matters worse…the reworked registry entries (see below) no longer apply in Windows 10/1709…they are simply ignored. To check your Windows version … right click on the Start menu and select > Run (type) winver (click OK)

If you decide you want the DNS client service to run… You can create a small batch file that clears DNS whenever you want.

Then File > Save As > change the file type to All Files and name the batch file flushdns.bat and place it in your Windows folder.

In most cases DNS Client Service is not needed, it is recommended to turn it off. These instructions are intended for a single computer (home user). If your machine is part of a “domain”, check with your IT department before applying this solution. This applies especially to portable users who travel or take their work machines home. Be sure to restore the service (if needed) before connecting (reboot required) to your work domain…

When set to Manual, you can see that the above “Service” is not needed (after some browsing – when set to Manual) by opening the Services Editor again, scrolling down to DNS Client and checking the “Status” column. It should be blank, if needed it would show “Started” in that column. There are several tools that can reset the DNS client for you … [more info]

Important! If you are using Network Discovery, the DNS Client Service is required and should not be set to either Manual or Disabled.

A better solution for Win10/8 would be to add two registry entries to control how long the DNS cache is saved. (KB318803)
