Block Sites Hosts

Block Sites Hosts – Health Update… things are getting worse… I slipped and fell in my kitchen and broke my leg (ankle) plates and screws to fix it. A few weeks later … I slipped and fell again in a hiking boot. Trying to stop my fall… instead I broke both my arms. Imagine this!! A cast on my leg and both arms… As much as I hate it, I think it’s time to retire from keeping my Hosts file…

Ways To Block A Website

You can use a modified HOSTS file to block ads, banners, 3rd party Cookies, 3rd party page counters, web bugs and even most hijackers and possibly unwanted programs. This is accomplished by blocking the link(s) feeding these small ores. The hosts file is initially loaded into memory (cache), so there is no need to open, edit, or change any settings other than the DNS Client service (see below). Windows automatically searches for the existence of a HOSTS file and if found, it first checks the HOSTS file for entries to the web page you just requested. 0.0.0.0 (prefix) is considered the location of your computer, so when a page you are viewing prompts for an entry listed in the MVPS HOSTS file, your computer will think that the location of the file is 0.0.0.0. When this file is not found, it jumps to the next file, thus preventing the ad server from loading the banner, the cookie or some unscrupulous tracker or javascript file.

Example – the following 0.0.0.0 ad.doubleclick.net entry blocks all files provided by that DoubleClick Server to the web page you are viewing. This also prevents the server from tracking your movements. Why? Why? … because in certain cases “Ad Servers” like Doubleclick (and others) will silently try to open a separate link on the web page you are viewing, log your movements and then yes … follow you to additional sites you can visit.

Using a well-designed HOSTS file means that these ads, annoying banners, hit counters, etc. It can speed up the loading of web pages without having to wait for them to load. It also helps protect your Privacy and Security by blocking sites that can track your viewing habits, also known as “click tracking” or Data Miners. Simply using a HOSTS file is not a panacea against all dangers on the Internet, but it does provide another very effective “Layer of Protection”.

In case you’re wondering… this all happens in microseconds, which is much faster than trying to fetch a file from the other side of the world. Another great feature of the HOSTS file is that it’s a bidirectional file, meaning that if some parasite gets into your system (usually bundled with other products), the culprit can’t get out (you can call home) as long as the necessary entries are available. . That’s why it’s important to keep your HOSTS file up to date. Get notified of MVPS HOSTS updates

Special Note: New Windows 10 users… The MVPS Hosts file installs smoothly, you don’t need to make any changes.

It started providing a HOSTS file in 1998… and now celebrates its 20th anniversary. proudly still the #1 HOSTS file on Google…

Important Note: The HOSTS file now includes the prefix change in HOSTS entries to “0.0.0.0” instead of the usual “127.0.0.1”.

This was done to fix a slowdown issue caused by Microsoft’s change to the “TCP loopback interface” in Win8.1.

This change in prefix should not affect everyday users. I got some feedback that COMODO antivirus and System Mechanic have issues with the “0.0.0.0” prefix to fix this issue:

You can use the “Change” function in Notepad to convert entries, or one of these free utilities (see below) has an option to convert entries from “0.0.0.0” to “127.0.0.1”.

This download includes a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file to HOSTS.MVP and then copy the included updated HOSTS file to the appropriate location. For more information, please see the version of Windows applicable to you…

When you run the batch file (mvps.bat) – right click and select Run As Administrator. Once updated, you should see another prompt stating that the task is complete. Some users may see a pop-up regarding changes to the HOSTS file from certain Security programs. Allow change… but if you ever see this popup (changes in HOSTS file) … investigate.

Can’t Block Website Using The Hosts File

Microsoft has done it again… making changes to the Operating System without any explanation. If you’ve recently upgraded to Windows 10 version 1709, you probably won’t be able to make any changes to the DNS Client as it has been disabled. But if you have Disabled or Manually set the DNS Client Service before, you can still do this. To make things worse then… temporary Registry entries (see below) are no longer valid on Windows 10/1709… they are simply ignored. To check your Windows version … Right click on the Start Menu and select > Run (type) winver (click OK)

If you decide you want the DNS Client service to run… You can create a small batch file that will flush the DNS at any time.

Then File > Save As > change the file type to All files and name the batch file flushdns.bat and place it in your Windows folder.

In most cases DNS Client Service is not required, it is recommended to turn it off. These instructions are designed for a single (home user) PC. If your machine is part of a “Domain”, consult your IT Department before performing this workaround. This is especially true for Laptop users who are traveling or bringing their work machines home. Make sure to reset the Service (if needed) before connecting to your Business Domain (restart required)…

Once set to Manual, open the Service Editor again and see that the above “Service” is not required (after some browsing – when set to Manual), go to DNS Client and check the “Status” column. It should be empty, it would say “Started” in that column if needed. There are several Utilities that can reset the DNS Client for you… [more info]

Important! If you are using Network Discovery, the DNS Client service is required and should not be set to Manual or Disabled.

A better Win10/8 workaround would be to add two Registry entries to control the time the DNS cache is logged. (KB318803)
