After you choose who you want to take on your adventure (Beck or Bo), you can start the search for letters through different challenges such as catching the apricots that fall from the tree (A) or popping balloons to reveal the missing letter (B ). While these apps are a bit flashcard (what can be a word, right?!), they are also very entertaining and a hit with our test subjects for young children. Both apps help kids associate the letter or number with their sounds, and they also do a great job of illustrating where the letter is in the alphabet sequence or what that written number looks like.

Some parental help will likely be needed to understand the concepts in these apps, so both are great options for when you want to sit down and work with your child on the basics of numbers and letters.

This app was a surprise finalist for us, but our little testers couldn’t stop playing. It’s a great way to start teaching colors, letters and shapes, whether by choosing the right shaped alien to match the shapes of the flying saucers or putting together simple interactive puzzles.

We recommend mom’s hand at first to help them understand the games, but after being shown once, our kids were able to work independently with the matching and puzzles, even clapping their hands between each correct and complete game. This one will keep your kids brain working!

Super entertaining and educational, this app can keep a preschooler engaged for a good amount of time… and bonus, they’re learning too! Drive About has a kind of Candy Land atmosphere where you move your mode of transportation (from cars to submarines to rockets and hot air balloons) to different number and sequencing challenges and games.

This fun app comes from a line of brilliantly fun apps from Sago Mini. They have so many, it was hard to pick just one, but we think Puppy Preschool is the most educational. It provides kids with exciting ways to learn about colors, spatial recognition, music (thanks to a colorful puppy xylophone!) and an introduction to numbers.

We loved the way this app encouraged kids to play and explore too – teaching them how to properly manipulate objects with the tablet screen.
