The long-rumored (and recently leaked) Oculus Quest 2 is here, in my house, in my face. I received it earlier this month, along with the news that this would be Oculus’ cheapest all-in-one VR system yet: starting at $299 and shipping October 13.

Idea. Attaching a social media account and its massive web of personally identifiable data (based on the accumulation of everything from service logins to average web browsing cookies) to computer hardware (VR headsets, phones, computers, TVs, etc.) ) is frankly an irresponsible move on the part of Facebook.
If that’s the be all and end of this review for you, I don’t blame you. I also encourage you to move comments on that specific opinion to my August opinion piece on development. (Or, honestly, redirect that commentary energy to the regulators in your state or country. I’ve already written to my state’s attorney general.)
But let’s assume you’ve already bought Oculus hardware or software in the past, or made your peace with Facebookening of the company. Or maybe, despite all the bad news, you’d make a deal with Mephi-zuck-eles for a higher-performance all-in-one Oculus Quest that’s now powered by a Snapdragon 865-equivalent SoC with more RAM, more pixels. and a higher refresh rate.
If that’s where you land, you’ll eventually find a different bummer about the Oculus Quest 2: how desperate Facebook is to get the price down to that magic $299 number. some new corner-cutting problem that wasn’t worth the saving. Those have accumulated to the point where Facebook will need to release a “2+” Quest review before it’s ready to recommend this headset.

The Oculus Quest 2 should look familiar, as its design language and overall form factor are almost identical to the original VR system that launched in March 2019 starting at $399. Both versions have four outward-facing cameras to track your close environment, so you can put the headset on anywhere and expect a convincing “carrying” effect within VR. This “inside-out” tracking model can be found in most Windows Mixed Reality headsets, and differs from systems like the HTC Vive and Valve Index, which won’t work without IR-emitting “track boxes” installed on your favorite play space.
Unlike most other VR headsets, the Quest line doesn’t require connections to a PC or console. Put it on your face, trace out a “play space” inside your house with your hands, and Quest 2’s internal hardware takes care of all the 3D rendering. (Like the first model, the Quest 2 also supports optional PC connections for your high-end games.)
Quest 2’s pair of hand-following controllers include the same array of buttons, triggers, and joysticks as the first version, along with the same “halo” construction to hold its infrared sensors. You may look at them and think you’ll get identical performance compared to other “Oculus Touch” controllers. Not so fast.

Levels in both Quest 1 and Quest 2, and sure enough, the older driver is noticeably more accurate. Worse still, Quest 2 did away with the grippy cross-grain texture found on Quest 1 controllers, while making them slightly heavier (151g for the new controllers, vs. 129g for Quest 1 controllers). ). As a result, I’ve felt that they slip away from me much more often than with the Quest 1. Having a wider pad on top of the controller to rest my thumb on doesn’t alleviate the problem. It’s the first of many curious changes between generations of Quest headsets.

In terms of cosmetic changes, the Quest 2 no longer covers the sides of the earcups with soft fabric, nor does it include a similar fabric lining on the inside. The first is a manageable bummer; I miss that smooth feeling of picking up the Quest, but I can live without it. The latter really affects usability by letting more light into your field of view; It’s not much, but with VR immersion, every light leak counts.
The biggest “cosmetic” change also has an incredible impact on the function of the headphones: Quest 2 has a new strap. Yuck. I’ve never seen such an abomination in my years of reviewing VR headsets. It’s worse than the Oculus Go, the previous bottom rung contender for the cheapest headset strap on the market.
Rather than employ a typical “halo” strap design, intended both to shift support and weight to the back of the head and to allow for a variety of hairstyles, Oculus has opted for an awkward split strap design. This connects one strap at the top of the head and two straps that go to the left and right sides of the headset. If you have long hair, now you have one less organic way to pull it out comfortably.
You put it on or take it off as it doubles as a strap on a backpack or messenger bag – you pull the strap through a pair of double-loop buckles. Quest 2 asks users to pull left to tighten, right to loosen. (Ever heard the phrase “righty-tighty, left-loosie,” Facebook?) It feels awkward and awkward every time, and its shape does a poor job of properly distributing the weight of the earcups. That weight, by the way, is nearly identical to Quest 1; the “10%” weight reduction of the new headsets comes almost entirely from the switch to this lighter default head strap.
