Oracle Cloud Database – In this lab, you’ll learn about the steps to set up database management for Oracle Cloud Database.

The database management service now also supports Oracle Cloud databases, which are Oracle databases on the following co-managed Oracle Database cloud solutions:

The database management features for Oracle Cloud Database are available as part of two management options that you can choose from when you enable database management.

The private endpoint is a representation of the database management in the VCN in which the Oracle Cloud database can be accessed, and acts as a VNIC with private IP addresses in the subnet of your choice. The private endpoint does not need to be on the same subnet as the Oracle Cloud Database, however, it must be on a subnet that can communicate with the Oracle Cloud Database.

First things first – everything is free here. Defining the connection is free. Storing secrets (credentials and passwords) in the Vault is free. It’s free to turret SSH into a private endpoint. This service is all about facilitating access to your database, either directly using our tools or through your apps.

The Database Tools service is not a new way to create, run or manage databases over OCI, it is meant to work with those databases.

You can create many different types of Oracle databases on OCI – Autonomous, Exadata CS, VM based instances, or even do your own installation on a compute node.

When you’re ready to use those databases, what’s the first thing you’ll want to do? I can think of a few big ones:

What exactly is a connection? Everything you need to know to connect to a database. This will contain the location of the database, its name, the listener port and the username/password. With that information, you can make a connection to your tools and programs.

So if we imagine this, say your favorite desktop IDE for Oracle, it might look like this –

As client applications, these are stored on the machine along with your program. Which is good, if you’re on that machine, but it’s 2021, and we’re in the cloud, and there should be an easier way to deal with our critical resources, such as Oracle databases!

The cloud also introduces questions. Like, how can we connect our database to the whole internet without having to ‘open’ it.

Most databases in OCI use private subnets (for good reason!), and this becomes a challenge when connecting to them. The service makes it very easy for application developers, or people using database tools to connect to those databases, to build defenses and manage private endpoints.

I can make a connection, put my password in OCI Vault, and then use that information to launch SQLcl in my autonomous database, without doing anything other than clicking a button.

And don’t forget, autonomous databases classically require client credentials including your two way TLS encryption key, so that the database can trust us as a client. It takes a bit of work to manage these ‘wallets’, even though we’ve coded a lot for you with our tools.

My connection resource has already been created in OCI – now I can use it whenever I want.

How To Send A Rest Api To Autonomous Database Of Oracle?

This GIF if very short, and a lot happens in a very short amount of time, but what you are seeing is I am asking for a SQLcl session to my autonomous database, defined in my connection resource.

‘Hello World!’ Beyond the scope and nature of the POST, if your database is also accessed through a private endpoint, SQLcl can also use that information to create an SSH tunnel/bash to make the connection!

One of the big things our team has put together over the years is SQL Developer Web. This has come across as ‘database actions’ in autonomous database services. And that’s great. but.

You have to go into the database, and then launch the database actions, connect and start your job. Hint: you can bookmark each autonomous instance to go straight to the connect bits… but it’s always a link, a page, to a database.

You will find the Database Tools Service Console page under ‘Developer Services’. You can of course search for it using the mega-menu, or you can navigate to it every now and then, or you can make some nice bookmarks using the new one. ‘Pinning’ feature in OCI console.

Well, when it comes to this part of defining your connection, if you don’t already have at least one vault available…

Oracle Launches Database As Service: Red Stack In The Cloud

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Vault is a managed service that lets you centrally manage the encryption keys that protect your data and the secret credentials you use to securely access resources. Vaults securely store master encryption keys and secrets that you might otherwise store in configuration files or code. Specifically, depending on the security mode, the keys are either stored on the server or they are stored on a Highly Available and Durable Hardware Security Module (HSM) that meets the Federal Information Processing Standards (FIPS) 140-2 security level. 3 meet security certification. https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/KeyManagement/Concepts/keyoverview.htm

And to access the things in your safe, you also need a key. Now, these requirements and others are covered in the Database Tools docs – so do your homework and read them. And, we want to make it even easier going forward, so stay tuned.

The good news is, creating a vault is probably something you only need to do once per project/application/group of ‘things’ you want to manage.

Each connection will have its own username and password. This would be for a single database – be it a PDB, CDB, or a classic single instance architecture database (11gR2..21c). And it can be for the cheapest resource, always free, up to the most expensive size we offer. All of these services are included and free to use with your OCI subscription.

We may query the OCI control aircraft to obtain a list of your autonomous database services. And with them, comes the information needed to get the client credentials. Just point, click, and you’re done.

I have my vault and key already defined, so I’m ready to ‘store’ my admin password. This step isn’t shown, but it’s just a classic ‘put in the password twice’ to make sure it’s the correct input form.

Since I am defining a connection to an Autonomous Shared Infrastructure database, I may need to provide credentials to enable Mutual TLS (MTLS).

If you accidentally choose the same secret that you previously provided for your database user’s password, you will see this:

We are smart enough to use the Autonomous Database Service API to ask for the credentials for you. Now, if you have already downloaded your wallet, or if you want to specify exactly what is being used, just use the ‘upload’ option.

If I open a connection, I can see that it is treated like any other top level OCI resource – it has an OCI and all – it can be tagged for easier filtering, or more importantly The thing is, you can restrict access to that from your fellow OCI users/apps via group roles, etc.

Two of today’s biggest features have been highlighted earlier – SQL Worksheet and Launch SQLcl. The worksheet will open with this connection activated by default. But, I could go straight to the worksheet and then choose a connection, it’s really up to me, and where I am in the console.

We can access the database, and we can make connections with the credentials stored in the vault.

I’ll cover ‘debugging’ connections in a later post, but this might help you figure out if you did something wrong or your password has expired, or…

I mean, it would still be cool if that was all. but it’s not like that. This is really only half the story. You see, since this is an OCI resource, we can use the OCI SDK, APIS, etc. to access these resources.

So, if I had a Python program that needed to connect to a database, it could just call the Database Tools service to ‘get’ a connection, bring it down, construct a connection object , and could have made the connection – without knowing all the developer details except the OCID.
