In many ways, this is the clumsy middle child. The iPhone 12 Pro is the same size, the same updated design, and essentially the same features as the iPhone 12. But instead of aluminum sides, the 12 Pro has a stainless steel body with carefully polished sides.

It’s also 25g heavier than the standard 12, making it relatively heavy (187g) compared to competitors of similar size and features, and a bit harder to hold as a result. It’s just 0.1mm wider than its predecessor, the 11 Pro, which had a smaller 5.8-inch screen.

The screen is the same stunning 6.1-inch OLED display found on the iPhone 12, but it’s slightly brighter on the 12 Pro. It’s also covered in Apple’s new “Ceramic Shield” material, which is more drop-resistant, and has a MagSafe charging and accessory system built into its back.

The iPhone 12 Pro has the same A14 Bionic processor as the iPhone 12 and iPad Air, but with 6GB of RAM instead of 4GB and a starting 128GB of storage—double the 12’s 64GB. Performance is the same in every way: fast, smooth and fast for processing photos, videos or games.

5G performance is the same as the iPhone 12: speeds are on par with the competition, but indoor 5G reception is slightly worse than the OnePlus 8T or Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2. This has little effect on the battery, outside of intensive testing.

Battery life is excellent and the phone lasts around 40 hours between charges, with the screen used for apps and videos being over six hours in that time, which is similar to the iPhone 12 and longer than most of the competition. This means the phone will run from 7am on the first day until the evening of the second day with normal usage, including four hours on 5G.

It takes 25 minutes to charge the battery to 50%, but just under two hours for a full charge with the £19 Apple 20W USB-C Charger – no power adapter included, just a USB-C to Lightning cable. The charging rate drops significantly below 95%, which is achieved in less than 90 minutes. A full charge with Apple’s new MagSafe Wireless Charger takes over three hours when connected to the same 20W USB-C charger.

Apple doesn’t list an expected battery life for the iPhone 12 Pro, but it can be replaced for £69. Typical smartphone battery life is at least 500 cycles while maintaining at least 80% capacity. The smartphone is generally repairable and out-of-warranty service costs £526.44 including screen. The iPhone 12 Pro received a repairability score of six out of 10 from iFixit.

The iPhone 12 Pro main board solder uses 100% recycled tin, 99% recycled tungsten, 98% recycled rare earths, and at least 35% recycled plastic in many other components. Apple is also using renewable energy for the final assembly of the phone and analyzes the phone’s environmental impact in its report.

The 12 Pro comes with the same version of iOS 14.1 as the iPhone 12, including a visual home screen overhaul with app library widgets and folders, enhanced privacy tools, and a new Translate app.

The iPhone 12 Pro has a triple 12MP camera on the back and a single 12MP selfie camera on the front. The two rear cameras, main and ultra-wide, and the selfie camera are identical to those of the iPhone 12 and work the same, including significant improvements to low-light performance, detail, and noise control.

The third camera on the back is a 2x telephoto lens that allows the iPhone 12 Pro to optically zoom from 0.5x to 2x and then up to 10x digital zoom. A telephoto lens can produce great images, and any optical zoom is better than pure digital zoom. But having only 2x zoom means it can’t get you closer to the subject, especially when compared to competitors with cameras with 3x, 4x, or 5x optical zoom.

Another addition to the 12 Pro is a lidar (light detection and range) scanner on the back. It measures the distance to objects, working in a similar way to how the iPad Pro does to scan a room for augmented reality (AR). But for the camera, it helps autofocus in the dark, allowing for much faster focusing in low light and portrait shots in night mode, which uses the main camera and the depth sensor for some impressive photos of people.

One area where Apple is very far ahead of the rest is video. In addition to the great video captured by the iPhone 12, the 12 Pro has an extra zoom and can shoot Dolby Vision HDR video with 4K recording at 60fps, while the iPhone 12 is capped at 30fps.

Note that the larger iPhone 12 Pro Max has a larger sensor and an improved type of optical image stabilization technology on the main camera, as well as a longer 2.5x telephoto lens; those looking for the best iPhone camera will want to wait.

Both 12 Pro phones will also be able to shoot in Apple’s new ProRAW format after the update. ProRAW files combine Apple’s photography computing system with the capabilities of the traditional RAW format for professional and enthusiast photographers to change various settings and choices made by the camera after the fact.

The iPhone 12 Pro is a good phone, but it sits in between a really great and potentially even better phone in Apple’s 2020 lineup.

It’s the same size as the gorgeous iPhone 12 and has all the good stuff: fresh design, great screen, long battery life, top performance, enhanced reliability, and 5G support. But it also has a few extra camera tricks, including an extra 2x telephoto lens and a lidar sensor, which remains something of an AR gimmick but useful for low-light autofocus.

It looks and feels more luxurious than the iPhone 12, but the use of stainless steel makes the 12 Pro noticeably heavier, which isn’t a good thing. That’s £200 more than the iPhone 12 and will be improved upon by the larger iPhone 12 Pro Max, which will have a more powerful camera.
