Veeam Cloud Tier
Many customers use Veeam Backup & Replication to protect their on-premises infrastructure and want to reduce the amount of physical backup infrastructure they need to purchase and maintain. They also want to ensure that their backups reside in highly durable and cost-effective storage. Storage services such as Amazon S3, Storage Gateway and Snowball Edge seamlessly integrate with Veeam Backup & Replication to meet these needs.
Veeam Backup & Replication enables customers to automatically orchestrate backups to Amazon S3 to help reduce their dependency and costs associated with more expensive on-premises backup storage. Originally released in January 2019 in version 9.5 Update 4, Veeam Backup & Replication has been used by customers like Best Friends Animal Society (case study) to improve their DR strategy while delivering cost savings. In February 2020, Veeam released Veeam Backup & Replication version 10, adding additional functionality to the capacity tier. A capacity tier is an additional tier of storage that can be attached to spare storage for scaling.
In this blog post, we review the options and best practices available to Veeam customers looking to integrate with storage services based on knowledge learned both in the lab and in the field. We also discuss strategies to help you use Veeam Backup & Replication to restore your on-premises workloads as Amazon EC2 instances for disaster recovery (DR) purposes. By the end of this post, you should have a better understanding of how the integration between Veeam Backup & Replication with storage services works. You’ll also have the information to decide which approach will work best for your organization’s use case, including any caveats to watch out for when implementing these integrations.
Scale-out backup storage (SOBR): A SOBR is a logical unit that consists of one or more backup storages that are configured as tiers. SOBR is used as a single target for backup and copy jobs. Customers must configure a SOBR that contains a performance tier that provides fast access to data with locally hosted backup storage such as direct-attached block storage, NAS storage, or a deduplication device. SOBR also allows customers to define a capacity tier, which is useful for long-term storage where Amazon S3 is used as object storage.

Veeam customers can also use Snowball Edge as an object store to place large initial backups on Amazon S3. Snowball Edge is a small, rugged and secure portable storage and peripheral computing device used for data collection, processing and migration. Snowball Edge appliances are purpose-built to move multiple terabytes of data offline to overcome the challenge of limited bandwidth. Snowball Edge encrypts all data at rest with 256-bit encryption with keys provided by the customer through the Key Management Service (KMS). This can be useful for customers with large volumes of local backups that may not have the WAN bandwidth to complete the data load in an acceptable amount of time. Veeam customers who want to use Snowball Edge must be running Veeam Backup & Replication 10a, which was released in July 2020. Copy and move operations: Customers can choose to configure their capacity tier to send Veeam backups to Amazon S3 in two ways. Customers can immediately copy backups to Amazon S3 after the backup job completes. Alternatively, they can move production-level backups to Amazon S3 after the backup chain is sealed and outside a specified operational recovery window.
Backup Chains: A backup chain consists of a full backup and any incremental backups made after the full backup. Veeam considers the backup chain “sealed” when it completes a new synthetic of an active full backup job.
Copy operations work in tandem with move operations. After the backup chain is down, Veeam checks if the data blocks reside in Amazon S3 and removes any data blocks that reside in the performance tier, leaving only the metadata. In the event of a recovery where the data blocks are located in Amazon S3, Veeam seamlessly restores the data from Amazon S3 without the intervention of the backup administrator.

Veeam Backup & Replication Version 10 supports the ability to use the following Amazon S3 storage classes: Amazon S3 Standard, Amazon S3 Standard-Infrequent Access (S3 Standard-IA) and Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA) . Most customers choose to put their data in Amazon S3 Standard or Amazon S3 Standard-IA. These storage classes offer low latency, high throughput, durability designed for 99.999999999% (11 9) across multiple Availability Zones, and low storage cost.
Customers can also choose to use S3 One Zone-IA. S3 One Zone-IA is for data that is accessed less frequently but requires quick access when needed. Unlike other Amazon S3 storage classes that store data in a minimum of three Availability Zones, S3 One Zone-IA stores data in a single Availability Zone. This results in costs 20% less than S3 Standard-IA. S3 One Zone-IA is ideal for customers who want a lower-cost option for infrequently accessed data, but do not require the availability and resiliency of S3 Standard or S3 Standard-IA. It is a good choice for storing secondary backups of local data or easily recreated data.
Customers should consider cost differences based on their access needs and availability requirements when planning to use Amazon S3 with Veeam Backup & Replication. Note: The capacity tier does not support Amazon S3 Glacier and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive at this time. If these Amazon S3 storage classes are required, customers are encouraged to use the Tape Storage Gateway, which is discussed in the next section. Additionally, Veeam does not support S3 lifecycle policies for transferring or expiring objects in Amazon S3 buckets used in the capacity tier. Enabling these policies can cause backup and restore jobs to fail if the required data has expired. It is also important to ensure that there is sufficient available WAN bandwidth between your on-premises Veeam Backup server and Amazon S3. Sufficient WAN bandwidth ensures that backup and restore jobs can complete within a time window that is appropriate for your organization.

Another enhancement of Veeam Backup & Replication Version 10 is the object immutability feature that uses Amazon S3 Object Lock in compliance mode. This feature can be enabled when defining an Amazon S3 storage repository in Veeam and allows customers to make backups immutable for a specified number of days. This is a popular feature because your Veeam backups are stored in Amazon S3 using a write-once-read-many (WORM) model. This prevents backups from being deleted, modified or overwritten – accidentally or intentionally, such as a ransomware attack. It is important to note that Amazon S3 buckets must have object locking enabled during S3 bucket creation. If there is a need to enable Object Lock on an existing bucket, please open a case with support who can help you further.
Veeam Backup & Replication Version 10 also supports the ability to backup directly to Storage Gateway in Virtual Tape Library (VTL) mode. Tape Gateway introduces a VTL consisting of virtual tape devices and a virtual media swap device to Veeam using iSCSI. Using Tape Gateway allows customers to take advantage of Amazon S3 Glacier and Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive storage classes. These storage classes can be useful when data is expected to be restored infrequently and if you can tolerate retrieval times that are not instantaneous. Retrieval times are typically between 3-5 hours for tapes archived to S3 Glacier, and typically within 12 hours for tapes archived to S3 Glacier Deep Archive. Customers also use Tape Gateway with Veeam to seamlessly replace on-premises physical tape usage with virtual tapes without changing Veeam backup workflows.
A Tape Gateway is typically deployed on-premises as a virtual or hardware device. Tape Gateway stores virtual tapes in service-managed S3 buckets and caches virtual tapes locally for low-latency data access. Tape Gateway transfers virtual tapes between Amazon S3 and Amazon S3 Glacier or Amazon S3 Glacier Deep Archive when you extract and export virtual tapes from Veeam.
