Veeam Cloud Connect Pricing – Last year, Veeam released Veeam Cloud Connect, a new technology that allows easy creation and consumption of off-premises backup repositories. This is the first solution designed specifically around Service Providers, both from a technical and a business point of view. Its extreme ease of use and capabilities made it an instant success, and to this day several hundred service providers offer off-premises backup services based on Cloud Connect.

As a first-generation technology, everyone expects additional capabilities in the next version, and the most common request is always “are you going to add replication capabilities?”.

As you can guess from the title of this post, that’s what’s coming in the next version!

Veeam Cloud Connect Replication: More Than Just The Cloud

Veeam Availability Suite v9 will deliver Veeam Cloud Connect Replication, a fast and secure cloud-based disaster recovery (DR) solution. DR is a great solution for increasing the availability of modern data centers, and does so by leveraging replication technologies and creating off-site replicas of virtual machines. When end users want to design and build a DR site, they face a problem: the capital costs of building and maintaining a secondary site. In the second location, owned or leased, they need to deploy new hardware and software according to the size of their production environment, configure it and even manage it, almost doubling their IT infrastructure effort. Also, since the production workloads are mostly run on the primary site, the secondary ones are rarely used, so the cost is even higher when compared to the value.

This is a situation where cloud-based solutions are a great fit. By leasing resources from service providers on a pay-as-you-go model, end users have the same end result (CPU, ram, storage, and network resources available for failover operations) without the capital costs and burdens of designing and deploying a DR site.

Furthermore, VM replication via Veeam Cloud Connect is easy to use and easy to set up, thanks to simple single port connectivity over a secure and reliable SSL/TLS connection to the service provider. So, there’s no need to set up and maintain a VPN connection, or open multiple ports in your customer’s firewall. Yes, you heard this right: we encapsulate ALL traffic – replication management traffic, actual VM data transfer, and even inter-VM communication during partial failover – into a single port.

End users, after subscribing to the service and connecting to the service provider, will see a virtual cloud host, a multi-tenant view of the DR site resources assigned with CPU, RAM, storage, and network resource allocations. Basically, the cloud host serves as the replication target for the replication jobs set up by the end user.

The failover will have several options. Full site failover will obviously be available, but we’re working to add an additional innovation: partial site failover. With it, end users will be able to failover to the DR site only part of their workload, while other VMs will still run on the production site. This advanced capability will be available thanks to the built-in network extension tools, which will simplify network complexity and maintain communication between running VMs regardless of physical location. So unlike other solutions, Veeam Cloud Connect Replication will not only manage data replication, but also network connection between the two sites.

Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) is undoubtedly one of the most requested services by end users. With Veeam Cloud Connect Replication, service providers will have a complete solution to quickly create and deliver DRaaS services for VMware vSphere and Microsoft Hyper-V environments.

Great technology is not enough to offer great service. To create an easy-to-use, fast-expanding service, especially for something as powerful (and complex in the background) as DR, it takes more than just robust replication and networking technologies. There are several other important sections, all of which are provided by Veeam Cloud Connect.

First, ease of use: once end users register a service provider, they will see a new virtual host added to their B&R. Replicating a VM to a service provider’s infrastructure is as easy as setting up a familiar replication task that points to this cloud host as a target. And since there is no difference in setting up replication jobs, existing Veeam users don’t have to learn anything new!

Second, the elimination of the biggest pain point of any DR service: the network. Network Extension tools maintain communication with and between running replica VMs during full and partial failover regardless of location – and without even having to make any changes to the replica TCP/IP settings before, during, or after failover.

Third, bandwidth friendliness. Seedling, compression, replication from backup, Built-in WAN Acceleration are all provided as part of Cloud Connect Replication to enable customers with slow or unreliable WAN connections, or large amounts of data, to protect their workloads with previously unreliable RPOs. possible with the available bandwidth.

Lastly, self service. This is essential for any cloud service, and Veeam Cloud Connect is no exception. This is why we will offer a web portal, running on a service provider and accessible to end users from any device and from any location. Using this portal, end users will be able to log in and initiate a failover plan on their own, without requiring any intervention from the service provider.

Before going into the steps required to configure this service, let’s take a look at some of the main roles and concepts:

Roles and Concepts: Communication in Azure is between two parties, the Service Provider and the tenant. Service Providers are organizations that provide cloud infrastructure (mainly repositories) to tenants, and tenants are customers who send data from the site and store their backups on the cloud infrastructure.

To start the Veeam Cloud Connect service on Azure, you need to provision a virtual machine first via the ‘Azure Marketplace’. Now you have two options and it all depends on your needs. If you are an Enterprise-level enterprise looking to extend your off-premises backups to Azure, then ‘VCC for Enterprise’ is a great choice. For Managed Service Providers (MSPs) who want to run a multi-tenant solution where they can send multiple customer backups to Azure, then ‘VCC for Service Providers’ is what they need and that’s exactly what I wanted.

One thing to note is the current version at the bottom left. At the time I am writing this post, the latest version of Veeam is 9.5 update 4a which means the version on Azure is out of date. This means that if you are good with your patch and your on-premises Veeam service is on the latest version, you will need to update the version in Azure once the virtual machine is provisioned.
