Veeam Cloud Connect Service Provider – Veeam Service Provider Console is a cloud-based solution with a distributed architecture. The product architecture includes the following structural components:

A core component of the solution architecture is the Veeam Service Provider Console. Veeam Service Provider Console is a web-based, multi-tenant portal for centralized management and monitoring of backup operations and services.

Veeam Service Provider Console consists of two structural parts – Veeam Service Provider Console Server and Veeam Service Provider Console Web UI. The Veeam Service Provider Console Server is the engine responsible for centrally managing Veeam Backup Agents and Veeam Backup & Replication. The Veeam Service Provider Console Web UI provides a web interface that allows users to interact with the Veeam Service Provider Console Server.

How Encryption Works

The Veeam Service Provider Console allows you to manage Veeam products installed on local or remote network machines. To communicate with managed machines, the Veeam Service Provider Console uses a cloud infrastructure implemented through Veeam Cloud Connect.

The main components of the cloud infrastructure are the cloud gateway and the Veeam Cloud Connect server. The Cloud Gateway provides a bridge between the Veeam Service Provider console portal on one side and the hosting machine on the other, and implements a TLS-secured communication tunnel between the two.

The Veeam Cloud Connect server is responsible for managing cloud infrastructure components. Additionally, if you use Veeam Cloud Connect to provide cloud repository and cloud hosting resources to customers or enterprise business units, the Veeam Cloud Connect server manages those resources.

To interact with machines in the hosting infrastructure, the Veeam Service Provider Console uses a management agent. The Management Agent is the Veeam Service Provider Console software component that collects data and performs all types of management, software installation and configuration tasks on managed machines. The Management Agent must be installed on the computer running Veeam products (Veeam Backup Agent, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Cloud Connect, Veeam ONE and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 Server). You can also install management agents on Veeam Backup Enterprise Manager.

The Veeam Service Provider Console management agent can act as a cloud agent, client agent, master agent, or infrastructure agent.

The Veeam Service Provider Console management agent settings file contains a list of FQDNs or IP addresses assigned to the company’s cloud gateways. This list can only contain up to 7 IP addresses or 150 FQDN symbols. When you deploy the management agent on a computer, the agent connects to the Veeam Service Provider console using the first available gateway in the list. If the connection fails, the management agent will automatically fail over to the next gateway. Once connected, the management agent obtains the FQDN or IP address of all cloud gateways assigned to the company from the Veeam Service Provider console.

Management agents deployed on machines running clients or hosting Veeam products (Veeam Backup Agent, Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365) collect data about the hosted software and send this data to the cloud gateway. The cloud gateway in turn transmits the acquired data to the Veeam service provider console. Management agents deployed on Veeam Cloud Connect servers send data directly to the Veeam service provider console, bypassing the cloud gateway. Commands from the Veeam Service Provider Console to the Management Agent communicate through the same path in reverse order.

The Veeam Service Provider Console stores the collected data in the Veeam Service Provider Console database and makes it available in the Veeam Service Provider Console portal. The database can be hosted on a Microsoft SQL Server running on the same machine where the Veeam Service Provider Console is installed, or on a remote Microsoft SQL Server (recommended). The diagram and table below describe the ports that must be opened to ensure that Veeam Service Provider Console components and machines interacting with these components can exchange data.

The default port used by the Veeam Service Provider Console web UI components to communicate with server components.

The default port on the cloud gateway used to transmit traffic from the management agent deployed in the client infrastructure to the cloud gateway.

Default port for traffic from management agents deployed in the service provider infrastructure to the Veeam service provider console.

The tenant backup server needs to access the CRL (Certificate Revocation Lists) of the CA (Certification Authority) that issued the certificate to the SP.

Veeam Cloud Tier For Backup And Replication

Port range used during transfer of the management agent from the Veeam Cloud Connect server to the tenant or service provider’s backup server.

A management agent transfer is performed when a Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam ONE or Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365 server connects to the Veeam Service Provider Console.

Default port for traffic from cloud gateways and Veeam Cloud Connect servers to the Veeam Service Provider Console server component.

Note: If you deploy the Veeam Service Provider Console server and Veeam Cloud Connect server on different networks, we recommend setting up a VPN bridging between these networks. Exposing the Veeam Service Provider Console server and Veeam Cloud Connect server ports to the internet is not recommended.

Default port for exchanging REST API requests and responses between Veeam Service Provider Console web UI components and client applications.

Default port for updating licenses and sending license usage statistics to the Veeam license update server. Port 443 must be open on the Veeam Service Provider Console server to allow incoming and outgoing traffic.

Backup As A Service

Port used to synchronize time between the Veeam Service Provider Console server and the NIST Internet time server. This port is required if you configure multi-factor authentication to access the Veeam Service Provider Console.

Default port for downloading Veeam Agent for Microsoft Windows settings files from the Veeam installation server. Port 443 must be open on the computer running the primary management agent.

Port used to transfer the settings required by the Veeam Backup Agent machine to connect to the Veeam Service Provider Console.

Remote access to the console requires access to the CRL (Certificate Revocation List) of the CA (Certificate Authority) that issued the certificate to the Veeam Cloud Connect provider. Last week Veeam announced that Version 9 of Backup & Replication will add a new feature to its Cloud Connect offering… Service Provider Replication. Version 8’s capabilities will be expanded to include advanced image-based VM replication.

The extended capabilities will enable service providers to offer RaaS (Recovery as a Service) to customers in the form of Veeam Cloud Connect Replication for Service Providers. This builds on Veeam Cloud Connect and enables existing and new Veeam customers to easily extend their backup infrastructure to cloud-based repositories for offsite backups. Last year, I worked closely with Veeam to productize Cloud Connect for Veeam and add it to the Zettagrid product catalog, and I’m looking forward to seeing how replication capabilities will be added to the service offering.

Veeam Cloud Connect Service Provider

This is an interesting (but expected) move by Veeam, who are competing with the likes of VMware vCenter Replication and DRaaS leader Zerto…they have a strong product based on vCloud Director that Hyper-V companies can also use The product replicates (hypervisor-agnostic) from on-premises to the service provider cloud in near real-time. There is a lot of debate about inline replication versus snapshot-based replication solutions, and this move is sure to further fuel that debate.

Hopefully I can get the beta version soon and start breaking down the replication mechanics. At first glance, there doesn’t appear to be any vCloud Director integration, which is a bit surprising since the service provider there is a strong vCD + Veeam partner. It would be a shame not to inherit Veeam’s vCloud Director integration history.
