Veeam Immutable Backup S3

Veeam Immutable Backup S3 – Money is a real problem for everyone. Inside you always hope that your family will not be hit, but how can you reduce the risk? In this post, we will see that you will soon be able to Fight Ransomware with Veeam 10 Immutability Feature and that it is dead easy to do it.

If you have secure access to your network and an attacker is logging into certain private accounts, you know you have a problem. Not only your data can be deleted, but also the remote storage of certain objects (Amazon, Azure…) remains unprotected. You may not know if there is a keylogger running somewhere on the internet or even an operating system…

With Veeam 10 Backup mode enabled, your backup content is backed up to the cloud every time it’s created, and again, when it falls within the defined activity window you’ve defined at your capacity level.

Disaster Recovery With Veeam

And when Veeam migrates (or copies) and restricts it to the capacity level, you can set the immutable flag (It’s a native function called “lock object” that is in Amazon AWS, but not in Azure yet).

This immutability is to prevent accidental deletion of data by admins, malware, or admins with malicious intent. (Yes, although that can happen). After setting the lock let’s say 3 days, your content cannot be deleted during that time.

It’s as simple as that. It’s a lock that’s used for every item that’s moved to the store.

Now, you may have a problem. What if some bad admin changes the defaults to defaults (unchecks the box). What will happen? Will all of your content be protected from being locked down again later? Or, where this logic wants the first time marked as a variable is applied to the end and makes the step empty. And so no storage of the last 3 days can be deleted.

The answer can be found on Amazon itself as Veeam is using under the hood, Amazon’s S3 technology called Object Lock.

Let’s do a quick tutorial on how to create an Amazon Bucket, get the key login information, enter it in the Veeam BDR console, and configure the storage location.

I assume you know how to create an Amazon account and request an S3 storage service. As for logging in, you will need to create an Aces Key that you will log in as an external account for Veeam Backup and Replication.

So quickly, this can be a really simple but time-consuming post for newbies because there are a few gotchas here and there.

Step 0: On Amazon go to Your Account and click on the drop down menu called My Security Credentials. Click on Create New Key and leave the Pop-Up window Open!!! (otherwise, you will no longer get the secret access key.

Now on the Veeam console, go to the menu > Manage Cloud credentials > and enter the ID key and the secret key that you have created on Amazon in Veeam.

Step 1: Create your bucket on Amazon S3 and during creation Enable Versioning and Locking objects there. (Box 2). Because once your bucket is created you can’t create objects that block things.

Step 2: Veeam 10 go to Storage > Right Click > Add Storage > Object Storage > Amazon S3.

Now select your Amazon account credentials by logging into Veeam console first > Select region > Click Next

Now, the idea is not to back up your data to Amazon S3 because you need to quickly back it up to OnPrem storage. So you need to configure Scale-out backup storage (SOBR) with local OnPrem storage and Amazon storage.

As such, you have the option of leveling the ability to specify that you can Copy the content to the object folder as soon as it is created and move the content to the object folder as they age from the recovery window.

Veeam 10 will be released in two weeks. The exact date is unknown, but soon you will be reading announcements on this blog. You can be 100% sure about it. – 🙂

Use An Oss Bucket As The Backup Repository Of Veeam Backup & Replication

Being able to protect data by locking it is perfect and makes companies better able to deal with a “man-to-man” attack or counter a ransomware attack where attackers gain access to high-level enterprise accounts, including Veeam admin accounts.

Veeam 10 will have support for Amazon S3 and resiliency, however, other cloud vendors support it. Cloudian for OnPrem or Wasabi storage as cloud storage also offers native features.

Copy Mode Ability All Levels and Extras will be “features to have”. It helps you protect the environment by separating the back files and storing them on different sites using a simple box.

Many customers use Veeam Backup & Replication to protect their infrastructure and want to reduce the amount of storage infrastructure they need to purchase and maintain. They also want to ensure that their backups reside in the most durable, affordable storage. Storage services such as Amazon S3, Access Storage, and Snowball Edge integrate with Veeam Backup & Replication to meet these needs.

Veeam Backup & Replication enables customers to automatically back up their data to Amazon S3 to help reduce the dependency and cost associated with storing expensive data on storage. Originally released in January 2019 in version 9.5 Update 4, Veeam Backup & Replication has been used by customers such as Best Friends Animal Society (case study) to increase their DR measures while providing cost savings. In February 2020, Veeam released Veeam Backup & Replication Version 10, which adds additional functionality to the platform. Capacity tieris additional storage that can be combined with size-reduced storage.

In this blog post, we review the options and best practices available to Veeam customers looking to integrate with knowledge-based storage services both in the lab and in the field. In addition, we discuss strategies to help you use Veeam Backup & Replication to restore your workloads to workloads such as Amazon EC2 during disaster recovery (DR). By the end of this article, you should have a good understanding of how the connection between Veeam Backup & Replication and the storage service works. You will also have information on how to choose the best method for your use case, including caveats to be aware of when implementing it.

Configuring Veeam Backup & Replication Sobr For Non Immutable Object Storage

Shared Storage Repository (SOBR): A SOBR is a logical entity that consists of one or more storage repositories organized as a layer. SOBR is used as a single-purpose restore and copy function. Customers should install a SOBR that includes a level of functionality that provides fast access to data and hosted local storage such as virtual storage, NAS storage, or virtualization devices. SOBR also helps customers define the level of capacity that is important for long-term storage, where Amazon S3 is used as an object store.

Veeam customers can also use Snowball Edge as an object store to access large seed volumes stored on Amazon S3. Snowball is a small, lightweight, and secure storage and computing device used for data collection, processing, and migration. Snowball Edge hardware is purpose-built for transferring large terabytes of data over the Internet to overcome the limitations of low speed. Snowball Edge encrypts all data at rest with 256-bit encryption and customer-provided keys using a Key Management Service (KMS). This can help customers with large storage facilities that may not have a WAN connection to complete data storage in a timely manner. Veeam customers who want to use Snowball Edge must be running Veeam Backup & Replication 10a, released in July 2020. For more information on how to set up Snowball Edge as an object storage, please review the relevant Veeam documentation.
