What Is Cloud Based Storage – As cloud object stores become de facto data lakes, a recent survey shows that businesses are between a rock and a hard place when it comes to finding and accounting for all the accumulated data.

It is human nature for dirt to spread in every empty space. We highlighted the trend a few months ago that for a growing segment of businesses, cloud storage is about to become a de facto data lake. The good news is that cloud storage is cheap and growing, and increasingly affordable. For example, many Hadoop cloud services rely on HDFS object storage, and increasingly, cloud providers are introducing services that provide ad-hoc queries or treat cloud object stores as extended tables for data warehouses.

The downside of relying on cloud storage as a target automation or data pool is the need to align data collection to a common purpose with the need to be accountable for data privacy or data protection, especially with laws like GDPR. it starts working.

Chaos Sumo, a company that plans to introduce a search layer for SaaS providers to add high-end cloud storage (currently, Amazon S3) this summer, recently released a survey that shows some of the pain points that cloud adopters feel.

Admittedly, at 120 respondents, the size of the survey was limited. And aimed at data ops professionals, the sample is likely skewed toward organizations that are already adopting the cloud. For example, 72% indicated that they use some form of cloud storage today. Of those using Amazon S3, 40% of respondents said they expect their use of S3 storage to grow by at least 50% in the next year.

For businesses, the primary use was for backup, backup, and archiving. But 28% already use data pool storage, and another 18% plan to use one in the next 12-18 months. Not surprisingly, in this sample dominated by AWS, the same proportion (23%) reported using Amazon Athena today. About half use Amazon Redshift data storage, which with Spectrum, can now handle S3 as an extended table.

The creation of tools like Athena opens interactive access to data from a system optimized for storage, without the need for ETL (although the data must be in some form of semi-structured storage, such as CSV, JSON, Parquet or other formats).

But as the chart shows, as data piles up in storage, a growing number are concerned about accountability. That has been the benefit of the commercial distribution of platforms like Hadoop and integrated tools for data analysis and processing, which include some form of data inventory, security, and access control as their raison d’etre. By comparison, cloud computing stores are barebones when it comes to governance or perimeter security — that was a function of the data platform, cloud host, or analytics tool that uses the data.

So a quarter of the sample is concerned that they will have to submit data for analysis, while a small, but statistically significant minority express concerns about data access, compliance, and security. They spend a significant amount of time cleaning and preparing data — more than half spend at least six hours a week, and nearly 40% of respondents say they spend more than 11 hours a week at work (those are results data preparation companies can eat. up).

Notably, only 7% of the sample reported that it is currently easy to analyze the data extracted from the object storage today. This is where the marketing of the survey sponsor, Chaos Sumo, comes into play. The company plans to launch what it calls a “data fabric” that will open up S3 data to Elasticsearch in the summer for OEM use by existing SaaS providers. We expect S3 to be a sweet spot for additional analytics platforms and tools. For Chaos Sumo, adding search as a useful feature for SaaS providers to make this data more visible will be another step in controlling the cloud storage beast. Today, cloud data storage accounts for 45% of all business data and in Q2 2021, that number. it can increase to 53%. Now is the time to embrace the cloud.
